Cyprus Moves Closer to the U.S. Visa Waiver Program
A high-level delegation from the United States visited Cyprus for a technical assessment of the country's security systems. This visit is part of the vetting process to determine whether Cypriot citizens will be able to travel to the U.S. without a visa in the near future.
The U.S. Embassy in Nicosia confirmed the visit, noting that American specialists are reviewing the procedures and security measures in place in the Republic. The goal is to determine whether Cyprus meets the stringent requirements of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).
Speaking before the 15th Economic Congress in Nicosia, President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides described the discussions with the American delegation as "absolutely constructive." According to him, the talks took place at both the technical and political levels, and, according to Cypriot experts, the meetings with the American side were successful.
Thanks to this visit, Cyprus has taken another step towards joining the U.S. Visa Waiver Program. Nicos Christodoulides expressed hope that the American side would soon complete its assessment and issue an official statement.
If approved, Cyprus will become the 43rd country to join the program. Currently, 24 of the 27 EU member states are already participating in the VWP, which allows eligible travelers to enter the U.S. for tourism or business purposes for up to 90 days without a visa.
Cyprus has long sought participation in the program, viewing it as a sign of trust and a strengthening of strategic relations with the U.S. The final decision will be made by U.S. authorities, who are expected to complete their review in the coming days.
