Cyprus Ranks Fifth in the EU for Household Waste Generation
Cyprus ranks fifth in the European Union for household waste generation per capita. Shockingly, 76.8% of the recycled solid household waste ends up in landfills.
According to the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat), in 2023, the per capita municipal waste generation in Cyprus was 653 kg, making it the fifth-highest in the EU. The total waste generated on the island in 2023 was 625,000 tons, a 1.7% increase from 2022, which saw 615,000 tons.
Out of the 496,000 tons of waste recycled in 2023, 76.8% was disposed of in landfills, 16.3% was sent for recycling, 3.2% was used for energy recovery, and 3.7% was composted. The EU average for household waste generation per capita in 2023 was 511 kg. Austria reported the highest waste generation, with 803 kg per person.
