Cypriot Pensioner Scammed Out of €145,000 by Fake UN Major
A 76-year-old woman in Cyprus fell victim to fraud, losing €145,000 to a scammer who posed as a high-ranking official.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on May 15. The woman initially reached out to the man through a mobile app after reading a social media post.
An online relationship developed between the two: The man claimed to be a UN major serving in Syria and, under various pretexts, persuaded the pensioner to send money to foreign bank accounts.
Before realizing she had been deceived, the woman completed ten transfers totaling €145,000. Police are now investigating the case as one of false representation and online fraud.
