Cypriot Nurses to Halt Work in Protest
Nurses in the Republic of Cyprus will go on strike as a sign of protest. The protest is scheduled for Thursday, May 23rd.
Representatives of the nurses' union announced the suspension of work in protest against staffing shortages. The strike will take place outside state hospitals on Thursday.
The work stoppage will commence at 12:00 and last for one hour - until 13:00. Nurses who are members of the "Pasidy" and "Pakipriot Pasyno" unions will participate in the protest.
A representative of one of the unions expressed concern about the statement by the State Health Services Organization (Okypy) claiming that there is no shortage of staff in state hospitals.
The union leader reminded that a year ago, representatives from Okypy acknowledged a shortage of about 140 nurses in Cyprus hospitals.
It is noted that Thursday's protest will not disrupt the normal operation of hospitals since only off-duty nurses will participate.
