Cyprus Forest College to Resume Operations After 10 Years
An extended meeting was held at the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Cyprus as part of preparations for the upcoming fire-prone season. During the session chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides, measures aimed at preventing and promptly responding to forest fires were discussed.
It was decided at the meeting that over the next 5 months, the state will strengthen its fleet with 10 firefighting aircraft. Additionally, it was decided to install additional sensors for early detection of fires.
Moreover, among the most important measures is the reopening of the Forest College in January 2025, after a decade. It is intended to provide basic training for forestry officials and simultaneously educate citizens, volunteers, and local government officials.
The summer season for forest fires has been extended to 8 consecutive months instead of 6. From April to November, six to eight stations will be on standby throughout the forest area.
It is also noted that by the end of May, the clearing of wild grass by regional administrations should be completed.
Furthermore, a proposal was made to transform Civil Defense into a Civil Protection Service.
