Leaders of the Two Communities in Cyprus Meet Today in the Buffer Zone
Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar and Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides are meeting today in the buffer zone in Cyprus for negotiations. This is their first meeting since the informal summit on the Cyprus issue, which took place in Geneva on March 17-18.
The talks, organized by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Cyprus, Colin Stewart, began at 9:00 AM at UN facilities in the buffer zone.
During the Geneva summit in March, hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, discussions focused on strengthening trust between the two communities. The meeting included representatives from both sides in Cyprus, as well as the three guarantor states—Turkey, Greece, and the United Kingdom.
Following the summit, Guterres highlighted significant progress in the dialogue between the communities and announced plans for a broader meeting at the end of July. He also stated that he intended to appoint a new personal envoy for Cyprus.
Later, Nikos Christodoulides revealed that the Greek Cypriot side had proposed several possible dates for a one-on-one meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader. Eventually, April 2 was agreed upon for the talks.
As of now, no details about the agenda or key discussion points of today’s meeting have been disclosed.
