Cyprus Migration Ministry rejects over 100 asylum applications from Syrians
The Ministry of Migration of Cyprus has rejected more than 100 asylum applications from Syrians, deeming them inconsistent with international and European standards.
According to CNA, the review of these cases was initiated on the instruction of Deputy Minister of Immigration Nikolas Ioannidis amid changes in the situation in Syria, which authorities believe allow for the return of refugees.
Migration services report that Syrians continue to leave the island, including voluntarily — with support from ministries and the police.
Cyprus was the first EU country to suspend the acceptance of new applications from Syrians in April 2024. Since May 2025, mass rejections of previously submitted cases have begun. The authorities state that they are pursuing a strict migration policy.
Syrians have long made up a significant portion of arrivals to Cyprus, which has sparked controversy and criticism from human rights groups and European institutions.
