Today, EU foreign ministers will address the Cyprus issue and EU-Turkey relations during a working lunch. For the first time in five years, Turkey’s Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, will attend the informal meeting.

The lunch, part of an informal meeting of ministers in Brussels, will be chaired by Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

According to Peter Stano, spokesperson for the European Commission, Cyprus is a crucial aspect of the EU-Turkey relationship. The discussions will focus on mutual interests regarding the Cyprus issue.

Informal talks are also anticipated between Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis and Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.

The ministers will explore EU relations with Greece and Turkey, as well as the Cyprus issue, in anticipation of an upcoming meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Cyprus will be represented by Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos.

The informal meeting will start with a discussion on Russia's military actions against Ukraine. During the working lunch, ministers will exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual interest. They will also discuss developments in the Middle East with UN Coordinator Sigrid Kaag, who will provide updates on the humanitarian situation.

The meeting is expected to conclude around 6:15 PM Cyprus time with press statements from Josep Borrell.
