Cyprus Ministry of Health Issues Tuberculosis Warning

March 24 marks World Tuberculosis Day every year, and the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Cyprus has issued a warning along with the latest tuberculosis statistics for the island.

According to the ministry, there were 81 reported cases of tuberculosis in Cyprus in 2023, with an incidence rate of 8.8 per 100,000 people.

To observe World Tuberculosis Day on March 24, the Ministry of Health organized awareness-raising activities to curb the spread of the disease.

This year’s campaign was themed “Yes! We Can End Tuberculosis: We Commit, We Invest, We Implement!” These efforts highlight the importance of coordinated action and necessary investment to eliminate the disease by 2030.

The Ministry also stressed the need for early diagnosis, equal access to treatment, and continuous monitoring to reduce the incidence of the disease and prevent drug resistance.

“The Ministry of Health continues to invest in new diagnostic methods, innovative treatments, and infrastructure to ensure safe treatment for tuberculosis patients,” said the ministry in a statement.

World Tuberculosis Day is observed annually on March 24 to raise awareness about the urgent need to eliminate the deadliest infectious disease worldwide.

According to the World Health Organization, in 2023, there were 10.8 million cases of tuberculosis globally, with the disease claiming the lives of 1.25 million people.
