The Municipal Pool of Nicosia Won't Open This Year
Nicosia's municipal pool, closed for the past five years, won't be accessible to the public this year. It's been reserved exclusively for athletes throughout the summer.
According to Petrina Kakoulli, the municipality's spokesperson, in an interview with Cyprus Mail, the initial phase of repairs at the public pool has already concluded, making it technically ready for use.
However, since the second pool for competitions and some auxiliary buildings are still undergoing repairs, the public pool has been fully booked for the summer season for athletes involved in water sports.
This arrangement was finalized on Monday after a signing ceremony between Nicosia Mayor Konstantinos Yorkadjis and the Chairman of the Cyprus Sports Organization, Yannis Ioannou.
While the agreement is positive news for water sports athletes, it means that Nicosia residents will, for the fifth consecutive year, be without access to a municipal pool throughout the summer season.
The pool was initially opened in 1989 but was first closed during the Covid-19 pandemic, followed by repair work estimated at 6.5 million euros.
