Thousands of Cars with Faulty Airbags Detected on Cyprus Roads
Approximately 12,000 vehicles on Cyprus roads are equipped with defective airbags, as announced during a meeting of the parliamentary committee on energy, trade, and industry.
AKEL MP Kostas Kostas and DIKO MP Chrisis Pantelidis, both members of the committee, discussed this pressing issue on the Alpha Update program.
According to the information presented, there have been 55,000 vehicle recalls in Cyprus over the past 10 years, resulting in the replacement of 33,000 airbags. In 8,000 cases, restrictions were placed on passing technical inspections, with 3,500 of those repaired. The remaining 4,500 cases are still under review, and these vehicles will not be able to pass inspections until their airbags are replaced.
“In total, there are currently 15,000 cases of defective airbags that are subject to recall, affecting around 12,000 vehicles. This figure is alarmingly high by Cypriot standards—likely much higher—because it only accounts for vehicles of European specifications for which data is available in RAPEX,” the statement highlighted.
Furthermore, there is no information on how many vehicles were imported from Japan or Singapore, which could number between 20,000 and 30,000.
