Heavy rains hit Famagusta: evacuation of elderly people was required
In Famagusta, several communities were flooded due to heavy rains. Fire services evacuated elderly residents from several houses that were in immediate danger.
It is reported that in the last 24 hours, emergency services received 56 calls. The flooding mainly affected the communities of Xylofagou, Liopetri, and Frenaros.
Despite no serious damages reported, the community of Xylofagou was the most affected by the elements. According to the community leader, at least twenty houses were flooded. Firefighters even had to evacuate elderly people from four houses.
"In all the years I have lived in the village, we have never had such rains or similar situations; the village looked like a small Venice," said the community leader.
Residents of Liopetri also faced extensive flooding and power outages. Emergency services had to pump water out of at least nine premises and clean the sewage system.
As a result, the fire services worked throughout the night, until around 3:30 am when the rains subsided. However, in the early morning, more calls were received from residents who arrived at work and discovered flood-related damages.
Four firefighting teams from Famagusta were reinforced by three brigades from Larnaca, one from civil defense, and two from a volunteer group.
