January 6: A Public Holiday in Cyprus to Celebrate Epiphany
January 6 is a public holiday in Cyprus, dedicated to one of the most important Orthodox Christian celebrations—Epiphany, also known as Theophany.
Known locally as “Fota,” this day is both a religious and national holiday. As a result, all government offices, banks, and major stores are closed.
To mark the occasion, Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus will perform the traditional water blessing ceremony in Ayia Napa. In the TRNC, the holiday will also be observed with a Divine Liturgy at the Holy Trinity Church (Agios Thyrsos) on January 6, 2025.
The government of the Republic of Cyprus recently published the official calendar of public holidays for 2025. Notably, long weekends next year will coincide with Green Monday and the Kataklysmos (Flood Festival).
