In Cyprus, an elderly woman fell victim to telephone scammers. The perpetrators swindled over 52,000 euros from a resident of Nicosia under the guise of being doctors.
According to the police press office, on Wednesday around 14:00, an unknown caller contacted the 72-year-old woman on her landline, posing as a surgeon from a general hospital in Nicosia.
The suspect claimed that the woman's son had allegedly been involved in an accident, requiring surgery costing 57,000 euros. The victim stated that in the background of the phone call, she could hear another person crying, claiming to be her son and confirming the incident.
Shortly after the conversation with the scammers, an unknown man arrived at the elderly woman's house, snatched a bag containing 52,000 euros, and fled.
The case is being investigated by the Nicosia Criminal Investigation Department.
In a statement regarding the incident, the police urge citizens to remain vigilant and warn that such phone calls are aimed at deception and money theft, especially targeting elderly people.
