A "red level of danger" has been declared in Cyprus due to forest fires
The Forestry Department of the Republic of Cyprus declared a "red level of danger" on Friday due to forest fires.
The department reminded that lighting fires without permission is strictly prohibited and is a criminal offense.
According to the Forest Law of 2012, violations can result in a prison sentence of up to 10 years and/or a fine of up to 50,000 euros.
Lighting a fire for cooking is only allowed in designated barbecue areas located at official picnic sites.
The public is also strongly advised to exercise extreme caution while outdoors, completely refraining from any activities that may inadvertently lead to fires.
This includes using tools or agricultural equipment that generate heat, sparks, or flames, such as grinding wheels, oxy-acetylene cutting, and welding.
If smoke or fire is detected, one should immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Service).
