A dust warning has been issued in Cyprus
The Meteorological Department of the Republic of Cyprus has issued a warning: increased dust levels are expected on the island on Wednesday and Thursday. Vulnerable population groups should exercise caution.
According to the meteorological service, dust is expected from Wednesday evening until Thursday.
Pulmonologist Dr. Haris Armeoutis told the Cyprus News Agency that people with respiratory and cardiovascular diseases are best to avoid prolonged outdoor exposure.
"In essence, dust means inhalable suspended particles present in the atmosphere, and because they have a very small diameter, they cannot be filtered by respiratory system mechanisms," Armeoutis said.
Since dust micro-particles also contain various chemical compounds and oxides, they can cause inflammation in the respiratory system.
Vulnerable groups should take precautionary measures and avoid outdoor activities until the dust settles in the atmosphere, and also try to avoid vigorous exercise and physical activities.
Vulnerable groups include individuals with bronchial asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, the elderly, and individuals with various cardiovascular diseases.
Workers in outdoor spaces should use appropriate protective measures, such as special respirator masks.
