Storm Warning Issued in Cyprus: Authorities Provide Guidance for Flood Situations
The Cyprus Department of Meteorology has issued a storm warning due to adverse weather conditions. Meanwhile, the Civil Defense Forces have shared a public guide outlining safety precautions to take in the event of strong winds, floods, or tornadoes.
Self-Protection Measures for Floods:
-
Ensure that the drains outside your home or workplace are clear of any blockages.
-
Check that the gutters on your property are functioning properly.
-
If your basement is located in a flood-prone area, dig a water collection pit and install an automatic water pump. Remove valuable items and expensive equipment from the basement.
-
If you have a yard, keep the soil loose so it can absorb water more effectively.
-
Secure items that could be swept away by floodwaters, such as water tanks, heaters, and other large objects.
-
Seal any gaps in your fence walls to prevent water from entering.
-
Prepare sandbags to protect your property from flooding, especially if it is in a high-risk area.
-
If heavy rainfall is expected, limit your movement and avoid working or staying in basements or underground spaces.
What to Do During a Flood:
• If you're inside a building:
• Evacuate the basement and move to a higher, safer area.
• If you're outside:
• Avoid crossing flooded roads on foot or in a car, bike, or motorcycle.
• If you find yourself on a flooded road, stop and turn around to find an alternative route.
• If your vehicle becomes stranded, leave it immediately, as it could be swept away or submerged.
• Stay far away from power lines.
• Do not approach areas where landslides have occurred.
After the Flood:
• If you're outside:
• Stay clear of flooded areas or those at risk of flooding.
• Refrain from interfering with rescue teams.
• Only use your phone if absolutely necessary.
Before you begin recovery efforts:
• Understand that the threat of flooding does not end immediately after the waters recede.
• Confirm with local authorities that it is safe to return before starting recovery work.
• Turn off electricity and water supplies to avoid further hazards.
• Wear sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing to prevent injury.
Self-Protection Measures for Tornadoes:
• If you're at home:
• Clear your yard of items that could be moved by a tornado, and secure anything that isn't fastened.
• Close doors and windows, but leave internal shutters open to help balance internal and external pressure.
• Stay away from movable objects and glass that may shatter.
• If you're outside:
• If possible, track the tornado's path and move to a safe area away from its route, staying clear of objects that could be blown around and pose a threat.
• If you're unable to escape the tornado's path in time, lie flat in a depression, covering your head with your hands to protect yourself from flying debris or uprooted trees.
Protection Measures for Strong Winds:
• Be extra cautious in areas with strong winds. Avoid unnecessary travel, seek shelter indoors, and keep doors and windows closed at home or at work.
• Remove any unsecured items from open areas (e.g., flower pots, tables, chairs, decorative items, etc.), and avoid activities that could lead to fires.
• Secure any billboards or outdoor signage.
• Stay away from coastal and marine areas during strong winds.
• Avoid walking under large trees, signs, or balconies. Secure all items that could be blown away by strong winds and cause damage or injury, such as signs, water tanks, and heaters.
• Employers should take the necessary precautions to protect workers outdoors, such as temporarily halting construction work or other outdoor activities.
