Another 6,820 Vehicles Recalled in Cyprus Due to Faulty Takata Airbags
In Cyprus, an additional 6,820 vehicles have been added to the recall list due to defective Takata airbags. However, the total number of recalled vehicles has decreased.
According to Giorgos Louca, head of the Department of Road Transport, these new 6,820 cases were identified through the European Union's RAPEX system, which issues rapid alerts for unsafe consumer products and consumer protection.
Authorities have also received feedback from an analysis conducted by Volkswagen. As with the other recalled vehicles, these additional 6,820 vehicles will be subject to the eight-month recall period.
Louca also mentioned that large shipments of replacement airbags are expected by the end of March. Meanwhile, his department continues to exert pressure on companies with smaller batches of recalled vehicles.
In addition, Toyota will be allocated space at the former State Fairgrounds in Nicosia, which will be converted into a garage for replacing airbags in cars imported from non-EU countries.
As of March 12, the total number of initially tracked vehicles has decreased from 81,060 to 69,516. This includes 2,500 vehicles that have been de-registered, as well as 5,400 vehicles marked as immobilized. However, the department will keep them on the list, as some may be re-registered in the future.
