In Cyprus, Yuri Gagarin's Memory was Honored
Over the past weekend in Nicosia, the memory of Yuri Gagarin was honored. Russian compatriots living in Cyprus and friends of Russia among the Cypriots gathered at the Municipal Park near the bust of the first cosmonaut to mark his 90th birthday.
The outdoor event was organized by the Historical Club of the Russian Center for Science and Culture (RCSC) together with students from the Evgeny Primakov General Education School at the Embassy of the Russian Federation. The meeting took the form of a presentation where participants were told about Yuri Gagarin's childhood, his preparation for the flight, and the historic event itself.
"Yuri Gagarin was a true Soviet man in the best sense of the word - a hero, modest, collected, calm, but always ready for a great deed, and at the same time very sincere in ordinary communication, very humane," said the head of the RCSC Historical Club, Yevgeny Kryakin.
According to TASS, on behalf of the scientists of Cyprus, the memory of the space pioneer was honored by George Troullias, the director of the Kition Planetarium and Observatory in Larnaca. Recognizing Yuri Gagarin's heroism, he also paid tribute to the heroism of the Soviet people.
After the meeting, the event's guests went on a tour of places associated with the first cosmonaut.
"Russia has always been proud of its explorers, scientists, educators, writers, and composers. Yuri Gagarin remains an idol for many even today, and in Cyprus, where the world's first cosmonaut visited in 1962, he will also be remembered as a great friend of the Cypriot people," said the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Cyprus, Murat Zyazikov.
