Pilot Program for Optional Full-Day Secondary School Launched in Cyprus

The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Cyprus has announced the implementation of a pilot program for an optional full-day secondary school (POSME) at Agios Dometios Secondary School in Nicosia for the 2024-2025 academic year.

This program is being carried out in collaboration with the Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support (DG REFORM) of the European Commission, through the Technical Support Instrument, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

The project aligns with the European Union's priority of providing quality and inclusive education for all, particularly its renewed vision for the European Education Area and the subsequent program for 2021-2030, as well as the EU Council's recommendation on “Paths to Success in School.” These initiatives aim to improve educational outcomes and reduce early school leaving.

The POSME initiative complements the morning program and supports the Ministry of Education’s strategic goal of strengthening inclusive education and facilitating a smooth transition for children from primary to secondary school. Participation in this program is optional, and this year it includes 20 first-grade students.

The program is flexible and tailored to the needs and interests of the students who choose to attend, providing them with a safe learning environment. It begins at 1:35 PM after the morning session and lasts until 4:35 PM.

Students will receive lunch, followed by a program that includes homework assistance, support in mathematics and Modern Greek language, as well as creative activities based on their personal interests, such as sports, arts, and theater.

The pilot phase of the program will be evaluated by a UNESCO working group in collaboration with the General Directorate of Secondary General Education and Culture, incorporating feedback from students, parents, and teachers.
