Cyprus Elects First District Governors
On Sunday, June 9, Cyprus held dual elections for members of the European Parliament and local authorities. Among the positions filled were the first governors of urban districts, a new role created as part of the local administration reform.
According to the election results, Constantinos Georgadjis, the former mayor of Nicosia, was elected governor of the city with 54% of the vote, defeating Andreas Assiotis, who received 46%. Voter turnout in Nicosia was 64.46%.
In Limassol, Yannis Tsouftas won the election with 47.9% of the vote, surpassing Vasilis Demetriades, who garnered 43.7%, and Christos Vakanas, who received 8.3%. Voter turnout in Limassol was 65.96%.
Angelos Hadjicharalambous achieved a convincing victory in Larnaca, receiving 63% of the vote and defeating Evangelos Evangelis, who obtained 37%. Voter turnout in Larnaca was 70.78%.
The most intense competition occurred in Paphos, where Charalambos Pittokopitis won with 41.9% of the vote, narrowly beating Costas Konstantinou, who received 41.8%, and Marios Tselepos, who got 16.3%. Voter turnout in Paphos was 76.91%.
In Famagusta, former mayor of Ayia Napa, Karousos, emerged victorious with 54.9% of the vote. His opponents, former mayor of Paralimni, Theodoros Pyrilis, received 29.7%, and Andros Ktorides garnered 15.4%. Voter turnout in Famagusta was 68.07%.
It is worth noting that the results of the mayoral elections in the capital cities were announced earlier.
