In Cyprus, a case of measles has been identified in a young child
In the Republic of Cyprus, a case of measles has been identified in a 20-month-old child. The infected boy has been hospitalized at the Makarios Hospital and is in stable condition.
According to the director of the pediatric clinic, Avraam Ilias, the infected child was admitted to the hospital on Tuesday evening with a high fever, anorexia, and a rash. It is known that the boy was not vaccinated against measles: he did not receive the vaccination as required. The first dose is usually administered at 12 months of age. At the time of illness, the child was already 20 months old.
The director of the pediatric clinic emphasized that the scientific community in Europe is concerned about the increasing incidence of measles, despite the availability of an effective vaccine for this disease.
"Last year, more than 50,000 cases and 10 deaths were registered in Europe," the doctor added.
The director of the pediatric clinic explained the measles outbreak in Europe as a result of the mass movement of people from countries with low vaccination coverage.
