COVID-19 Outbreak Recorded in Cyprus
In the Republic of Cyprus, there has been a surge in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks. In the week from November 24 to 30, 995 new cases were identified.
Deputy Head of the Department of Epidemiological Surveillance and Control of Infectious Diseases, Christos Haralambous, provides this statistic. The specialist attributes the increase in the number of cases to the arrival of colder weather.
It is noted that the majority of new cases are registered in Nicosia - 58.3%. At the same time, most of the infected individuals are identified in the age groups of 40–44 (9.7%) and 55–59 years (9.4%).
The overall incidence rate per 100,000 residents increased by 29.1 percent compared to the week from November 17 to 23.
In total, from November 24 to 30, a total of 25,074 molecular PCR and express tests were conducted, of which 4% yielded positive results. For comparison, from November 17 to 23, 25,253 tests were performed, with 2.8% testing positive.
Higher incidence rates were observed in patients in the age groups of 85 years and older (9.4%) and 0–3 years (8.1%).
From November 24 to 30, 26 people were also hospitalized. The previous week, 13 infected individuals were admitted to the hospital. There have been no reports of new admissions to intensive care and resuscitation units.
