Cyprus launches voluntary military service for women
Cyprus Defense Minister Vasilis Palmas announced that next week the government will review a decree introducing voluntary military service for women in the National Guard. This will allow women to officially serve and contribute to the country’s defense readiness. The first group of female volunteers is expected to begin service at the end of October.
The decision was made possible by a law passed by the Cypriot Parliament in April of this year. According to it, women’s voluntary conscription is carried out on the basis of a Cabinet decree, similar to the compulsory service for men.
After adoption of the document, the Minister of Defense will be authorized to issue a separate directive—based on a proposal by the Chief of the National Guard. It will outline the units women will be assigned to, service terms, selection process, registration rules, accommodation conditions, transfers, leave, and other organizational details.
Key provisions include:
— Only women with medical fitness category I/1 or I/2 will be accepted for service. For men the threshold is lower—service is possible with categories I/3 and I/4.
— The minimum service term will be six months.
— Women’s service will be equated with men’s: they will receive the same rights and consequences, including impact on pension and social benefits, as well as on eligibility for employment in the public sector.
— After completing their service, women may voluntarily remain in the reserve, if they wish and the army confirms the need.
The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the introduction of voluntary female service is aimed at enhancing the operational readiness of the National Guard and expanding the country’s defense capabilities.
