Cyprus Launches Digital App with Fruit and Vegetable Prices
The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Cyprus has launched an application featuring prices for fruits and vegetables. Already, 1,200 people have subscribed to the government channel e-Kofini on the messenger app Viber.
Minister of Agriculture Maria Panayiotou announced this on Monday. The e-Kofini channel on Viber was created in collaboration with the eponymous platform established by the government, which lists prices for locally produced fruits and vegetables.
According to the minister, the platform's creation is the first step toward effectively narrowing the price gap set by producers and paid by consumers.
The online platform tracks prices for vegetables like cucumbers, zucchinis, broccoli, cauliflower, onions, peppers, beans, and peas, as well as fruits such as bananas, watermelons, melons, and strawberries.
The minister also noted that the average prices for these listed products are updated every Monday and Thursday and are published on both the Ministry of Agriculture's website and the Viber channel.
In the first report published on the online platform last Thursday, it was stated that prices for fruits and vegetables at retail outlets are "significantly higher compared to prices sold by producer groups and organizations."
"In many cases, the same products are sold at retail outlets at prices more than twice as high as those charged by producer groups and organizations," the report said.
