Cameras to Be Installed at the Site of the New Year's Eve Tragedy in Limassol
At the intersection where four people lost their lives in a New Year's Eve car accident in Limassol, road cameras will be installed. This decision was announced by Alexis Vafeiadis, the Minister of Transport of the Republic of Cyprus, following a meeting with experts from the Department of Public Works.
Following the meeting, the Road Safety Council provided a series of recommendations, including both short-term and long-term measures.
Immediate actions include the installation of speed control cameras. According to the minister, if accepted, this system could be put into operation within a few months.
"We have decided to propose to the police to install a photo system for speed control on this road. Until then, regular police patrols will be suggested in this area," added Alexis Vafeiadis.
As a reminder, the fatal accident, in which four people lost their lives, occurred on the night of January 1 on the Platres road in the Kato Polemidia area of Limassol. The victims of the tragedy were members of one family – grandparents and two grandchildren. The family was returning home after celebrating the New Year when their car was hit by a pickup truck at the intersection.
All four victims were not wearing seat belts.
