Paphos Beats Omonia in the First Cypriot Derby of the Conference League
In the first-ever Cypriot derby in the UEFA Conference League, Paphos FC triumphed over Omonia. The second leg of the Round of 16 took place on February 20 at the AlfaMega Stadium in Limassol, with the hosts securing a 2-1 victory.
The new format of the European club competitions pitted these two Cypriot teams against each other in the opening round of the playoffs. The first leg, held a week earlier at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia, ended in a 1-1 draw.
In the return leg, Paphos took the lead in the 28th minute with a goal from Bruno. The second half saw both teams exchange goals: Stevan Jovetić scored for Omonia, while Jonathan Silva put Paphos ahead again.
With this victory in the Cypriot derby, Paphos FC advanced to the Round of 16 in the UEFA Conference League. This match marked the first-ever direct encounter between Cypriot football clubs in European competitions.
Additionally, the third Cypriot team competing in European club tournaments, APOEL, was eliminated after losing 2-0 at home to Slovakian champions, Slovan Bratislava. The first leg had ended in a 2-2 draw.
