Freedom Monument in Cyprus to Be Officially Unveiled 52 Years After Its Construction

Cyprus will hold the long-awaited official opening of the Freedom Monument, which has stood since its construction 52 years ago.

The ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, March 30, 2025, at 11:30 AM. This event will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the EOKA liberation struggle (1955-1959).

The opening ceremony is being organized by the Holy Archbishopric of Cyprus in collaboration with the EOKA Historical Memory Council, the EOKA Fighters Association, the EOKA Liberation Struggle Foundation, the Municipality of Nicosia, and the Nicosia District Local Government Organization.

Among those attending will be George, the Archbishop of the Cypriot Orthodox Church, and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.

“This ceremony marks a significant milestone in preserving historical memory and recognizing the heroism of those who fought for Cyprus’ freedom,” reads the announcement.

The Freedom Monument was initially erected in 1973 to honor the EOKA fighters who participated in the struggle for Cyprus' liberation from 1955 to 1959. Located on the Pontokataros Bastion of the Venetian Walls, the monument was never formally unveiled due to the Turkish invasion of 1974.
