Cyprus Parliament Approves Voluntary Military Service for Women
The Parliament of the Republic of Cyprus has approved voluntary military service for women. They can now enlist in the National Guard for a minimum term of six months.
The law was passed with 32 votes in favor, while 15 members of the AKEL party and independent MP Alexandra Attalidu abstained.
According to the new law, women will be able to voluntarily enlist in the military following an annual decree issued by the Minister of Defense.
In coordination with the head of the National Guard, the Minister of Defense will also issue a decision outlining the enlistment dates, the duration of service, placement units, and other related details.
The voluntary military service for women will last no less than six months. This type of service offers the same benefits as mandatory military service, including social security credits and eligibility for public sector positions in education.
Women will be eligible to join the military after completing secondary school. After their service, they will have the option to serve as reservists if they wish.
For men, compulsory military service lasts 14 months.
"Today's decision marks a significant step towards strengthening the principle of equality and reinforcing our defense structures," said Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides in a post on platform X.
