The Heroes' Square in Limassol awaits a major renovation
The Heroes' Square in Limassol is set to undergo a major renovation. Restoration work on this historic site will begin in November.
The contract for the construction work was signed on Monday, August 8, in the Municipal Hall of Limassol. The document was signed by the city's mayor, Yiannis Armeoutis, and the director of the contracting construction company An. Christou Constructions.
The project, with a total budget of 3.9 million euros, is being implemented under the THALEIA 2021-2027 Program for Political Cohesion, co-financed by the European Union. The implementation of the project will take 18 months.
Prior to the signing of the agreement, an architectural competition was held, in which the winning project, titled "The Square of Everyday Heroes," was developed by AA&U-Socrates Stratis and the studio INB2in. The project is under the authorship supervision of Maria Hatsisotiriou from INB2in.
"The Square of Everyday Heroes" will be implemented on the principle of a "smart" floor, where infrastructure will cater to both social and environmental needs. The floor will consist of perforated surfaces designed to collect rainwater and transport it to underground reservoirs through linear channels running across the square.
The project will allow for seamless movement across the entire square without steps, connecting the streets around its perimeter, which will be pedestrian-only for several hours a day. Additionally, structures such as "Little Rialto," "Greenhouse of Ideas for All," "Playhouse," and "Hanging Gardens" are proposed.
It is expected that the work will be carried out in a manner that minimally impacts the tenants and café owners on the square.
