A Russian detained on suspicion of robbery during a cryptocurrency deal in Limassol
Police have apprehended one of the suspects in a robbery that occurred during a cryptocurrency transaction in Limassol. The detained perpetrator is a Russian national.
According to the police press service, a 35-year-old man wanted for gang robbery committed in Germasoyia was arrested yesterday evening around 18:00 in Agios Dometios. After the arrest, he was handed over to the criminal investigation department in Limassol.
It was previously reported that the robbery took place around noon on Tuesday, April 2nd.
The victim intended to purchase cryptocurrency and arranged to meet a stranger via a popular messaging app to exchange 50,000 euros. Initially, it was reported that the victim of the robbery was Russian; however, the police later clarified that the victim, who suffered at the hands of the criminals, was an Israeli businessman of Russian origin.
The robbery itself occurred in a car in the parking lot. One of the assailants grabbed the victim by the throat and let two accomplices into the car, who took the victim's wallet and fled in a rented car, which they later abandoned in an alley before leaving in a taxi.
The police promptly identified the identity of one of the three criminals. The identities of the other two assailants are still being determined.
