Teenagers Set Fire to Migrant Shelter in Cyprus
Last night, a major fire erupted at a shelter for underage migrants in Oroklini, Cyprus. Teenagers ignited a series of mattresses inside the building.
According to the police, the initial report of the fire at the hotel on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue in Oroklini, housing underage migrants who arrived in the country unaccompanied by adults, was received by emergency services after midnight.
Rescue teams evacuated the building and extinguished the fire in two rooms. However, around three in the morning, the fire alarm sounded again, this time with five rooms ablaze.
Preliminary investigations suggest that both fires were caused by arson: teenagers were reportedly setting fire to mattresses. For reasons not yet known, the underage individuals allegedly set fire to their rooms twice, at 23:46 and 02:40 on the first floor.
The fire resulted in significant damage to equipment, common areas, and stairwells on the first, second, and third floors of the hotel.
Approximately two months ago, underage immigrants attacked police officers who arrived at the scene to maintain order following a series of fights and public disturbances.
