Cyprus Police Warn of New WhatsApp Scam
The Cyprus Police have warned citizens about a new type of scam gaining popularity on WhatsApp. Scammers are promising their victims enormous profits from investments.
On Monday, the Electronic Fraud Department of the police reported this new type of scam. The department has received numerous complaints about WhatsApp messages sent to users in Cyprus from abroad. Gullible citizens are being invited to participate in "promising investments."
"Criminals are promising outrageous profits, which is unrealistic. The public should trust companies licensed by the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission to avoid the risk of falling victim to scammers," said a department official.
According to the police officer, many Cypriots have already fallen for the scam. Fortunately, in all cases, the victims managed to avoid significant financial losses. After the initial transactions, the scammers would ask for more money, raising rightful suspicions among the victims.
However, if funds are transferred to the scammers' accounts, it will be challenging to trace the fraudsters and recover the lost money since the transactions are not made through banks but other means.
If citizens receive similar messages, they are advised to report them to the police and then delete the messages.
