Cyprus police to conduct widespread driver checks starting Monday
Starting tomorrow, Cyprus police will carry out large-scale alcohol and drug checks on drivers to stop people driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Objective: to prevent serious and fatal road traffic accidents. Over the week, beginning Monday, there will be increasing checks for alcohol and drugs on the roads.
Authorities added that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs was the main cause of fatal road traffic accidents in Cyprus from 2022 to last year: 23.3% of such incidents were linked to alcohol or drug use.
According to the police, "reckless driving" is the second most frequent cause of fatal road traffic accidents, with 21.4% of such incidents related to reckless driving.
"Throughout the campaign, police will carry out intensive road traffic checks across Cyprus, while also conducting public awareness sessions aimed at increasing road safety awareness and responsible driving," police said.
