UN Secretary-General’s Envoy Submits Report on Cyprus Issue to António Guterres

Maria Angela Holguín Cuellar, the personal representative of the UN Secretary-General on Cyprus, presented her report on the Cyprus problem to António Guterres last night.

According to Turkish and Greek media, the Colombian diplomat’s report on the possibility of resuming negotiations aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue is currently under review by the UN Secretary-General.

In her report, the envoy detailed her six-month tenure and her efforts to find common ground between the two sides of the island.

It is expected that after reviewing the report, António Guterres will decide on the next steps the UN will take regarding the Cyprus issue.

Additionally, today, Colin Stewart, Commander of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), will present a report on the current state of the Cyprus issue at a closed session of the Security Council in New York.

This briefing coincides with the drafting of the UN Secretary-General’s latest annual reports on the situation and actions of the UN on the island.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington. They discussed the Cyprus issue, bilateral relations between Greece and Turkey, as well as other regional and global issues.

The next meeting is scheduled for September in New York on the margins of the UN General Assembly.

On Friday, Kyriakos Mitsotakis intends to meet with António Guterres to discuss Greece’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council next year, as well as the Cyprus issue.
