The Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Republic of Cyprus, Murat Zyazikov, announced an increase in the number of Russians arriving on the island. As the summer season approaches, the number of Russian citizens in Cyprus is growing, despite sanctions and the absence of direct air travel.

In an interview with the TASS news agency, Murat Zyazikov expressed hope for the soon resumption of direct air travel, as this would correspond to the humanitarian interests of both countries.

The diplomat emphasized that despite the sanctions, the tourist flow from Russia to Cyprus has not ceased but, on the contrary, continues to increase.

Russians are attracted not only by the magnificent beaches and pristine nature but also by the friendly attitude of the Cypriots towards the island's guests.

According to the head of the Russian diplomatic mission, most compatriots come to Cyprus for vacation and to visit their relatives and loved ones.

"This means one thing: despite the lack of direct air travel and the associated difficulties, our compatriots find ways and opportunities to visit Cyprus, preferring it to many other destinations," said the diplomat.

Murat Zyazikov also noted that recently new routes have emerged, including through Jordan and Georgia, to reach the island. Additionally, this year is expected to see the launch of direct flights between Cyprus and Kazakhstan.

It is worth adding that according to the Statistical Service of Cyprus, by the end of 2023, 61.8 thousand tourists from Russia arrived on the island.

Thus, the number of arriving Russians exceeds the number of travelers from some European countries with which Cyprus has direct air communication.

"Considering the long history of relations between our countries, it is necessary to preserve and further develop the ties established over the years - cultural, educational, scientific, commercial, religious. Cypriots and Russians actively support this approach," emphasized Murat Zyazikov.
