The US Ambassador to Cyprus visited Famagusta

The US Ambassador to Cyprus, Julie D. Fisher, visited Famagusta. During the visit, the diplomat toured the historical landmarks accompanied by the mayors of the northern and southern parts of the city.

During the ambassador's visit, she was accompanied by the mayor of the northern part of Famagusta, Suleyman Uluçay, and the head of the Greek-Cypriot side of the city, Simos Ioannou. After the official part of the visit, the diplomat, accompanied by officials, took a walk through the historic fortified city of Famagusta.

During the walk, historical sites were visited, and the rich cultural heritage of the city and its significance for the island were discussed.

The mayor of northern Famagusta, Suleyman Uluçay, drew attention to the historical and touristic significance of Surici and thanked for the contribution to passing on the cultural heritage to future generations.

The mayor also noted that, in addition to the work carried out by the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage, within the framework of the signed protocol, the municipality and the Department of Antiquities and Museums are working on the protection of the deformed historical city walls of Surici.

According to the mayor, cultural heritage sites are territories open for exchange and can be visited by representatives of all cultures and societies, and joint use contributes to societal unity.

Suleyman Uluçay and Julie D. Fisher thanked the head of the southern part of the city, Simos Ioannou, for his contribution to the work on the unification of the two communities.
