President of Cyprus announced "bold healthcare reform"
President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, has announced “bold reforms” in the healthcare sector. New legislative acts are in the final stages of preparation and will come into effect soon.
The head of state made this statement at the opening of an event on the occasion of European Patients' Rights Day, organized by the Federation of Patients' Associations of Cyprus (OSAK) at the Presidential Palace.
In particular, the president noted that in 2024, the establishment of the Ombudsman's office will continue, one of the tasks of which will be to ensure the implementation of the 14 principles of the Charter of Patients' Rights in Cyprus.
According to the Cypriot leader, these 14 rights “must be recognized and, most importantly, fully respected in every country, not only through beautiful words and statements but also through policy.”
The president also added that the sole aim of the forthcoming reforms is to protect the National Health Service, which is currently the largest social sector.
“As a country, we have important work ahead of us, but I believe that since the adoption of the Charter in our country, important steps have been taken, and these steps have been taken primarily thanks to the work of OSAK,” said the head of state.
