Domestic violence victims’ app launched in Cyprus
Cyprus has launched the Elpis app for victims of domestic violence. With it, users can discreetly send a distress signal to the police with one tap, without needing to make a call or visit a station. The app operates silently, which is crucial in emergency situations.
According to the police and the Ministry of Justice, reports of domestic violence have almost quadrupled in six years — from 1,000 in 2019 to 4,000 in 2024. Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis stated that Elpis aims to ensure victims’ safety and simplify access to help. The app has already saved hundreds of lives abroad.
Additional measures include the creation of special units for vulnerable individuals, implementation of protocols, police training, and strengthening of legislation. Police spokesperson Evi Nicolaou added that the increase in complaints may indicate growing trust in law enforcement.
