The Republic of Cyprus Celebrates Ohi Day: Road Closure Schedule
On Monday, October 28, Cyprus will celebrate the national Greek holiday, "Ohi Day." Festive parades and religious services will take place across the island.
In the morning, President Nikos Christodoulides, accompanied by Minister of Education Athina Michailidou, will begin the day by attending a religious service at the Ayios Varvara Cathedral in Nicosia, which will be led by Archbishop Georgios.
Following the church service, President Christodoulides will lead the student parade in front of the Greek Embassy in Nicosia, joined by Greek Ambassador Ioannis Papameletiou and other political and military figures.
According to the police press office, due to the church service at St. Barnabas Cathedral and the parade on October 28 in Nicosia, parking will be prohibited starting from midnight on October 27 in the following areas: Archbishops’ Square, Koraia Street, Isocratus Street, Zeno of Kition Street, as well as Konstantinos Paleologos Avenue, Omiros Avenue, Bayronos Avenue, Michalaki Karaoli Street, and Evagoras Avenue.
Furthermore, from 9:00 AM on October 28, traffic will be halted on Omiros Avenue, from the intersection with Agiptu Street to the intersection with Eleftherias Square, and on Bayronos Avenue, from the traffic lights near the Museum to the intersection with Grivas Digenis Avenue.
From 9:30 AM, traffic will also be suspended on Bayronos and Omiros Avenues, as well as Michalaki Karaoli and Demosthenes Severis Streets, from the traffic lights to Grigoris Auxentiou Avenue.
Parking for the October 28 Parade:
- Davila Parking Lot
- Parking behind the moat, under the municipality building
- Parking near the fire service
- Parking next to Kolokasi
City buses in Nicosia after 9:30 AM, coming from the areas of Strovolos, Lakatamia, Antoupolis, Parisinou, Egomi, Ayios Dometios, and Ayios Pavlos, will drop off and pick up passengers at the parking lot on Rigaenitis Street, next to the Solomos statue, via Paphos and Kinira Streets.
City buses in Nicosia after 9:30 AM from the areas of Pallouriotissa, Kaimakli, Aglantzia, Dasoupolis, and Latsia will drop off and pick up passengers on the Kanigos Bridge near the "OXI" pavilion.
Drivers are strongly advised to follow the instructions of on-duty police officers.
The use of drones during the parade is prohibited.
"Ohi Day" is a public holiday in Greece and is also widely celebrated in the Republic of Cyprus. It commemorates the rejection of the ultimatum presented by fascist Italy to Greek Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas on October 28, 1940.
