Makario Stadium to Become a Modern Sports Hub with €40 Million Overhaul
The historic Makario Stadium in Nicosia is set for a major €40 million transformation into a modern, multi-functional sports complex.
The ambitious project aims to turn the existing stadium into a cutting-edge indoor arena, while also upgrading nearby facilities such as the Lefkotheo indoor gym and the Eleftheria Sports Arena. Plans also include building a new football pitch with on-site accommodation for athletes—an upgrade that could significantly boost Cyprus’s appeal as a destination for professional training camps.
Despite ongoing structural issues, the government has already spent nearly €10 million in recent years to maintain the stadium, even though it failed safety inspections. A feasibility study for the full renovation is expected to be completed by September. If the project gets the green light, the new complex could establish Cyprus as a regional center for sports tourism, offering world-class facilities to both local and international teams.
Located in the Makonitissa area of Nicosia, Makario is a multi-use stadium that has hosted a variety of sporting events over the years. It remained the capital’s largest sports venue until the GSP Stadium (Pancyprian Gymnastic Association) opened in 1999.
