The court has arrested a suspect in the arson of the New Year tree in Paphos
The Paphos District Court has remanded in custody a 39-year-old man suspected of setting fire to the city's Christmas tree.
According to the police, the man was arrested after witness testimonies were obtained, and evidence of his involvement in the tree arson was found. The suspect was spotted by the police at 23:50 on Friday evening. Last Saturday, he was brought to court, which placed him in custody for four days.
Recall that the Christmas tree on the central square of the Paphos municipality in Cyprus burned down on the night of January 3. The fire broke out on Wednesday morning, shortly after 03:00. Fire brigades promptly arrived at the scene, but they were unable to save the main symbol of Christmas and New Year. The 12-meter-high Christmas tree with 17,000 lights and hundreds of red balls was completely destroyed by the fire.
The police investigating the incident determined it was arson and gathered information and evidence pointing to the involvement of the 39-year-old suspect.
