Woman Arrested at Paphos Airport with Large Shipment of Smuggled Cigarettes

A woman was arrested at Paphos Airport over the weekend after attempting to leave the country with a large shipment of smuggled cigarettes. On Sunday, the Paphos District Court remanded her in custody for four days, but she was released after paying a fine.

According to Michalis Nicolaou, Assistant Police Chief of Paphos, the woman was apprehended around 3:30 PM on Saturday. During a baggage inspection, customs officers discovered 120 boxes, each containing 200 undeclared and unmarked packs of cigarettes. The woman had planned to fly from Cyprus to Manchester.

 

The traveler was arrested for illegal possession and smuggling of goods and was taken to court, where she was initially remanded in custody.

The woman later abandoned the confiscated goods and was released after paying a fine of €5,000.
