European Parliament elections begin in EU
Today marks the start of the European Parliament elections in the European Union, lasting until June 9. Voting stations in Cyprus will open on the final day of the election.
The first polling stations for the European Parliament elections will open on June 6 in the Netherlands. On June 7, voting will take place in Ireland, followed by Latvia, Malta, and Slovakia on June 8. The Czech Republic and Italy will vote over two consecutive days: June 7-8 and June 8-9, respectively.
The remaining member states of the European Union, including Cyprus, will hold elections on June 9.
Altogether, 370 million European citizens in 27 EU member states have the right to vote, electing 720 members of the European Parliament.
These elections take place in a single round. Initial assessments of the new composition of the European Parliament will be published around 8:15 - 8:30 PM Brussels time on June 9. Preliminary results are expected between 11:15 - 11:30 PM.
Earlier, the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Cyprus officially announced that the European Parliament and local government elections will be held on Sunday, June 9.
For the upcoming European Parliament elections in Cyprus, 706,534 voters have registered.
Among the total number of registered voters, 568,608 are Cypriots, including 837 Turkish Cypriots holding Republic of Cyprus identity cards and residing in the southern part of the island.
Additionally, a total of 103,269 Turkish Cypriots residing in the TRNC have registered to vote in the June elections for the European Parliament.
For the first time in Cyprus's political history, three Greek Cypriot parties have included Turkish Cypriot candidates in their electoral lists for the European Parliament elections. The candidates from the Turkish Cypriot community are Niyazi Kizilyurek from the AKEL party, Hulusi Kilim from the "Volt" party, and Oz Karahan from the Movement for Cooperation of Environmentalists with Citizens (Green Party).
