In Limassol, a school security guard suffered burns after a gas cylinder attack

Attack on a guard at “Gimediko Ypsonas” Primary School in Limassol

On the night of September 9, 2025, at one of Limassol’s schools, the “Gimediko Ypsonas” Primary School (Γ’ Δημοτικό Σχολείο Ύψωνα), an incident involving a homemade incendiary device — a gas cylinder — occurred, reports SigmaLive correspondent Sakis Stylianou from Limassol.

A group of young people entered the school premises and headed towards a newly constructed mini-football field, built as part of a collaboration between the school administration and the Municipality of Kuprius (Dimos Kuria). When the security guard attempted to drive the intruders off the school grounds, one of the attackers threw a lit gas cylinder directly at the guard’s face.

Sources report that the guard suffered second-degree burns on his face as a result of the cylinder. After the incident, he received medical assistance and was urgently transported to the hospital.

At the time of publication, the official position of the local authorities regarding the incident has not been announced. It is unclear whether a criminal case has been opened, whether an investigation is underway, or if any security measures have been implemented on the school grounds.

This incident raises serious concerns due to the increasing threat to the safety of educational institutions and their staff. This is far from the first incident involving incendiary devices in such locations — urgent and effective measures are needed to prevent similar attacks in the future.
