Monument to the Victims of Cyprus’ First Serial Killer Unveiled in Limassol
A monument has been unveiled in Limassol to honor the victims of Cyprus’ first serial killer, Nikos Metaxas, also known as "Orestis." Relatives of the victims and volunteers gathered to pay tribute to those who tragically lost their lives at the hands of this killer.
The unveiling ceremony and memorial service for the five women and two children who were victims of Orestis took place along the Harmony Trail in the coastal area of Ayios Tychonas (Limassol). The monument consists of a stone bench.
The event was attended by Kyriakos Xidias, the mayor of the Eastern Limassol municipality. Due to rain, the commemorative ceremony and memorial service were moved indoors.
The initiative for the monument was led by a group of volunteers. The secretary of the volunteer organization responsible for the installation noted that they decided to take action because they work closely with people in need and wanted to show their support.
Nikos Metaxas, Cyprus’ first serial killer and a captain in the National Guard, went by the name "Orestis" on social media. His crimes spanned from September 2016 to August 2018. His victims included five women and two girls.
In June 2019, Metaxas was sentenced to seven consecutive life terms, marking the harshest sentence in the history of Cypriot justice.
