In Limassol, a monument to the renowned director has been unveiled
A ceremony was held on May 13 in Limassol to reveal the sculpture of Michaelis Cacoyannis, the director of the film "Zorba the Greek," which won three Oscars.
The sculptural piece is situated on the pier in front of the 5-star hotel "Amathus" in the eastern district of Limassol, Agios Tychonas. Crafted by Cypriot sculptor Philippos Yapanis, the sculpture depicts the director with a video camera during the filming process.
Among the sculptor's other notable works is a six-meter "Mermaid" located on the roof of a building in the Old Port of the city and "Lulis" along Limassol's Sea Road.
Director Michaelis Cacoyannis, born in Limassol in 1922, directed his first film, "Happiness in Athens," after relocating to Greece in 1953.
However, the pinnacle of the Cypriot director's career was marked by the film "Zorba the Greek," released in 1964 and based on the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis. The film garnered seven Oscar nominations and ultimately secured three wins – Best Supporting Actress (Lila Kedrova for the role of Madame Hortense), Best Cinematography in a black-and-white film (Walter Lassally), and Best Art Direction (Vassilis Fotopoulos).
