In Nicosia, Circular Walkway around the Old Town Walls Opens
Over the past weekend, a portion of the expansive circular walkway encircling the walls of the old town was inaugurated for leisurely strolls in Nicosia. The opening ceremony welcomed the presence of the Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeades. The municipality formally announced the launch of this new route on Monday, May 27th.
According to Nicosia Mayor Konstantinos Yorkadjis, this project constitutes a vital component of a broader initiative aimed at transforming the perimeter of the walls and moat into a “green” zone within Nicosia, accentuating the historical significance of the Venetian walls.
For the first time since English rule, the linkage of five sections of the moat now facilitates an immersive walk at moat level, alongside the Venetian walls, offering a scenic route through lush greenery adjacent to this iconic historical monument.
Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades emphasized that Nicosia has undergone significant transformation and continues to progress steadily across various interconnected projects, thereby enhancing the city's social infrastructure.
The minister underscored the importance of including the bust of Doros Loizou along the new Nicosia walking route, ensuring that future generations have the opportunity to engage with their heritage.
