On Friday, two new electric car charging points opened in Nicosia. Both are located in the city center: one at the parking lot on top of the Tripoli bastion on the city walls, and the other in the parking lot near the D'Avila bastion. The charging points are free and available from 8:00 to 20:00 every day.

Nicosia authorities stated that with the opening of the new electric car charging points, the municipality hopes to minimize carbon dioxide emissions in the city by reducing pollution caused by vehicles and facilitating access to environmentally friendly modes of transportation.

It is worth noting that earlier reports indicated that Cyprus ranks fourth in the level of electric vehicle adoption in Europe.

Data published by Eurostat showed that in 2022, only 0.14 percent of vehicles in Cyprus were electric, totaling 830 out of 601,131 registered cars in the country.

It is also noted that according to government data, these figures have increased since then: by the end of last year, a total of 1,322 electric vehicles were registered in Cyprus.

However, despite the current low overall figures, the government remains optimistic about its plans to expand the use of electric vehicles in Cyprus.

It is worth adding that in February, Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades stated that the government aims to have 80,000 electric vehicles in Cyprus by 2030.

Additionally, government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated that the government aims for all new vehicles purchased in Cyprus to be electric by 2035.
