A rally was held in Nicosia on Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day
In Nicosia, dozens of people marched to mark the Day of Remembrance for the victims of the Armenian Genocide. The "Day of Armenian Martyrs" is observed annually on April 24 in memory of the victims of the tragic events of 1915.
Members of the Armenian community of Cyprus participated in the march, walking through the city streets carrying banners and posters criticizing the policies of Turkey and Azerbaijan.
Several political parties in Cyprus expressed solidarity with the march.
"Preserving historical memory is a duty to the deceased and a service to future generations," stated AKEL in a declaration.
The statement also noted that "protecting the historical memory of the Armenian Genocide serves as a strong reminder that humanity must strive to prevent the recurrence of such abhorrent crimes."
Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day is observed annually on April 24. It was on this day in 1915 that more than 800 representatives of the Armenian intelligentsia were arrested and later killed in the Ottoman capital, Istanbul.
